Checking your own ranking measures nothing.

Every business owner has done it. You open Google, type your service and your town, and look for yourself. You are somewhere near the top. Either that is a relief or it is confusing, because the phone is not ringing.

Both readings are wrong, because the search you just ran did not measure anything.

Local rank is not a number

For a local search — a service and a place, or a service typed by someone standing in a place — Google does not hold a single ranked list. It builds the list at the moment of the search, and one of the strongest inputs is where the searcher physically is.

Move the searcher two miles and the list changes. Move them five miles and it can change completely. The business that was first is now seventh. Somewhere further out it is not there at all, and a competitor you have never heard of is first, because they are three streets away from the person searching.

This is not a glitch, and it is not something that happened to you. It is what local search is. Google is answering a question about proximity, and it is answering it correctly.

So there is no such thing as your ranking for a term. There is only your ranking at a point.

Why your own check is the worst possible point

Now consider where you were standing when you checked.

You were at your business. That is the single location at which you are guaranteed to perform best, because you are as close to yourself as it is possible to be. It is the one point on the map that tells you nothing about anybody else’s experience.

Then there is everything Google knows about you specifically. You are signed in. You have searched for your own business before, clicked your own website, opened your own listing. Your device has a history and an address. None of that is true of the customer you are trying to reach.

You have run a test on a sample of one, at the most favourable location available, using the least representative account in the country.

There is a version of this that is worse. A client rings to say a competitor has overtaken them, and they are right — from where they are standing. Or they ring to say they are still first, and they are also right, from where they are standing. Both calls describe the same site. Neither describes the market.

What the map actually looks like

The honest picture is not a position. It is a field.

Take a grid of points spread across the area a business genuinely serves, and run the same search from each one. What comes back is a shape. There is usually a core where the business ranks strongly, a ring where it slips, and an outer zone where it does not appear at all. The core is often much smaller than the owner believes, and the outer zone often begins well inside the area they are paying to be visible in.

The shape is the finding. Where the ring sits, how fast rank decays as distance grows, whether the core is centred on the business or pulled off to one side by a competitor — these say more about what is achievable than any single position ever could.

Two shapes matter more than the rest.

A tight, steep field. Rank falls away quickly, within a mile or two. This usually means the category is dense and proximity is doing most of the work. It is a structural fact about the market, not a failing of the website.

A wide, shallow field. Rank holds across a large area. This usually means the category is thin, or the business carries enough prominence to hold ground at distance. It means there is room.

The uncomfortable part

Once you can see the field, you can ask the question that actually decides whether money should be spent.

Is Google structurally capable of putting this business in front of that customer, in that place, at all?

Sometimes the answer is no. If a business sits at one edge of a city, in a saturated category, the far side of that city may be permanently out of reach through the map — not because the site is weak, but because somebody else is nearer to everyone who lives there, and always will be. No amount of content, no volume of citations and no monthly retainer moves a business closer to a postcode it is not close to.

That is a hard thing to be told. It is also cheaper to be told it before you spend than after.

Most local search work does not begin with this question. It begins with tactics — pages, posts, links, reviews — and the tactics may be perfectly competent while the underlying answer was no from the start. The expectation was never examined. It just quietly failed to arrive.

The point of measuring the field first is that it makes the impossible visible early, and it makes the possible specific. Once you know where the ring sits, you know what you are buying: not “better rankings”, but the ground between here and there, and an honest view on whether that ground is winnable.

What to do instead of checking

Stop checking from your desk. It cannot tell you anything you need to know.

Look at the field instead — a grid of points across the area you serve, the same search run from each one, and the shape that comes back. Then read the shape before anyone sells you a tactic.
